Star City Motor Madness is a celebration of America’s passion for the automobile and the love of cruising. The event enters its seventh year in 2008 and is held annually on the last Friday and Saturday in June.
Star City Motor Madness draws from throughout the Mid-Atlantic and beyond. Through fees from the participants and donations from sponsors, the event raises money for the Virginia Museum of Transportation which is located in Roanoke. For spectators all activities are free!
The evening of Friday, June 27th (6pm to 10pm) classic and special interest automobiles, trucks and motorcycles assemble for a cruise on Roanoke's historic "strip," Williamson Road. Throughout the evening there are two venues along Williamson Road where cruisers will be able to park and spectators may enjoy the vehicles up close. Each venue will feature food and entertainment.
The afternoon and evening of Saturday, June 28th (2pm to 7pm) a car/truck/motorcycle show will be held in downtown Roanoke. Many city blocks will be set aside for the car show as well as Elmwood Park. You’ll find a special section set aside for our featured automotive brand this year: Corvette. As of now, over 100 Corvettes will be displayed. There will be automotive aftermarket displays and live music.
In 2007 approximately 15,000 cars, trucks and motorcycles gathered for the cruise. The combined events drew over 80,000 people. Attendance was up substantially for the 2007 events.
As was the case the last 6 years, this year all net proceeds will go the Virginia Museum of Transportation Automotive Gallery. The museum is famous for its diverse collection of America's transportation history with an impressive collection of railroad "rolling stock" including the famous Norfolk and Western J611 streamlined steam locomotive. The museum is currently developing an automotive gallery and has secured the space, partial funding and is beginning preliminary construction.
Roanoke is Virginia's third largest city. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the city and surrounding suburbs are home to 236,000 residents. The two-day event, which draws from the region, the Mid-Atlantic States and beyond, has a positive impact on area hotels, motels, restaurants and attractions.
